STP'S GR. CH. BUCK ROM

As a pup Buck was sold by Pat Patrick to a physician. He proved to be an unsatisfactory pet and was sold to the late Alan Waldman who matched and won two with Buck in the low 50's. One over Aldo's Zeke, who later became a Champion, and the other over Winchester's Conan. STP purchased Buck from Alan Waldman when Buck just turned 2 years old and campaigned him at his correct weight, 46 lbs. As soon as STP started to work Buck they saw he had incredible stamina. In STP's hands, Buck demolished all of his competition, which included some highly regarded match dogs. Buck did not dazzle fanciers with ten-minute wins, but he had virtually no weakness as a match dog and always dominated his opponent, no matter what style.

Buck's first match, with STP, was into Tito's Tonka, which was no match for Buck as Tonka stopped in less than :30 minutes.

His next was against Captain America's Jumbo Jim. Jumbo Jim was a double bred Gr. Ch. Hank dog, and was hand picked to defeat Buck. Jumbo made an incredible scratch at 1:30, but by 1:57 he collapsed in his corner unable to go.

In Buck's 5th he went into Rodney's two time winner JR, littermate to Gr. Ch. Yellow ROM. JR was handled at :52 minutes and could not go any further. Jr. later went on to win three more.

For Buck's 6th match was against P. & H.'s Rocky, a rough son of Ch. Jeep and Gr. Ch. Miss Rage. Rocky was picked up in a little over an hour. Rocky went on to win his championship after another loss to Super Gnat's Gr. Ch. Ace.

At this point Buck was retired as a 6 time winner and not yet 4 years old. I was conditioning Super Gnat's Gr.Ch. Ace for his 4th match, into P. & H.'s Rocky, when I received a call from STP. He explained that after 2 years of retirement, his Gr.Ch. Buck was contracted into Ricky Jones and Gr.Ch. Sandman, at 48 lbs. Both dogs were exceptionally seasoned match dogs with similar styles and STP predicted that the match would be a long one. This was the first time in history that two registered Grand Champions were to meet.

Rebel Kennels Gr.Ch. Sandman was bred and raised by Ricky Jones from a Rascal / Jeep and Boomerang cross. Word had it that Ricky was able to take some of the unwanted dogs from some very good dogmen, and by sheer determination and good sense Ricky had bred bulldogs that could compete and win over the best in the country. Some of the best match dogs, at any weight, were either owned by Rebel Kennels, or were matched into Rebel Kennels.
There were about 25 fanciers waiting for the match to start. My friend Peter from Holland was betting on Sandman, while I was betting on Buck. This was the first time we were not on the same side of the betting. The dogs were released and Sandman shot over like a rocket and got a good hold. When Sandman got to the stifle, Buck slowly and deliberately got him out. Ricky got all excited and said that Bucks stifle was broken. For the first 20 minutes Sandman was all over Buck, but then Buck started to dominate the action. Buck was a little stronger and had a little heavier mouth. He was taking the match to Sandman, but neither could get much of a lead over the other. Both dogs could hardly be held in their corner as they rocketed across on their scratches. About an hour and a half into the match Sandman got a good hold on Buck's neck. As Buck tried to twist out of this hold, Sandman held on and a stalemate ensued. Sandman would not release his hold and Buck could not get free, so the two Grand Champions were locked motionless and time dragged on. It seemed that both dogs were asleep. Buck started to vocalize his frustration at being unable to move. Ricky became even more excited, interpreting the noise as a sign of Buck wanting to quit. Nothing could be further from the truth as Buck finally extricated from the hold and resumed his dominance over Sandman. Ricky not only began to denigrate Buck but also STP. At one point he said that he was going to kick Buck's ribs

in because he was such a cur. I encouraged him to go ahead and do it since the foul would leave Buck the winner. I think that Ricky began to realize that Buck was going to beat his Sandman dog and this was his way of dealing with that possibility. No matter how many times and how many ways Ricky verbally abused Buck and STP he never let it bother him. STP stayed with his dog and ignored all the outside shenanigans. STP gave fanciers a good demonstration of coolness and decisiveness in a tough situation. This was an even match until at the end when Sandman began to falter and it was clear that Buck was going to win. At three hours and 17 minutes, after 3 more scratches Sandman took the count. Buck's courtesy scratch, was a running one and he slammed into Sandman.

We hustled Buck into a nearby shed and I started an intravenous line. Buck received 10 cc's of Azium in about 800 mls of Ringers before he ripped the line out of his leg. In an adjacent shed, Ricky worked in an effort to save Sandman. I was told that he gave Sandman an injection of Epinephrine, which is often used by human rescue personnel. The shot of "Epi" as it is known to the members of the rescue squad, killed Sandman immediately. Buck would not be still so I stopped the IV, which had leaked into the surrounding tissue. Buck stayed at my house for two weeks after the match, recovering from his ordeal. At 5:00 AM every morning, Buck would start his scream / howl, which echoed throughout the house. When I walked him outside, Buck would try to lunge at the other dogs in my yard, even though he could hardly stand up. It was obvious that his spirit had not been broken in spite of the lengthy battle with Sandman. Once recovered Buck went back to STP's and the old warrior lived the good life, breeding bitches and eating good food until he died.

It’s important for any pit bull owner to microchip their pit bulls. Its shows responsibility and it means you are taking ownership. A lot of dogs disappear on a daily basis and we can stop that, by just investing in a microchip.

What happens to you dog when they steal him/her? In most cases with a pit bull, the person who steels the dogs fights them. In other cases, people steal your pit bull and mistreat them. These poor animals need us to stand up for them and protect them against animal abuse. I want to urge pit bull breeders to microchip their puppies before you sell them, this shows that we care about the breed!!!

I was walking my dog two weeks ago, and out of the blue came another pit bull, running towards us and ready to attack. I was so shocked to see the dog outside in the road and so aggressive. The first thing I did was I called the owner, he was in the house and the garage door was open. The owner came out and saw what was happening; he went into the house and called the dog from the inside (stupid). I was so upset and confronted him; it’s because of people like him that this breed has a bad reputation!! All he could say was, he was sorry. We need stand up for the breed and confront people who do not play their roles as pit bull guardians!!

Why do you need to choose the right bloodline?

Every bloodline has its own characteristics, and needs to be considered before choosing a puppy. It depends on oneself what you want you pit bull to do. If you want a show dog, looking for a family pet, you first need to do your research.

Most reputable breeders don’t breed for color, but for temperament. This is a characteristic many people overlook when starting the breeding process. One of the many things we forget when choosing a pit bull, it’s a friend that you have to look after for the rest of his/her life. When you choose a pit bull you need to know you are not choosing just another dog but choosing a companion.

The word companion means to have a friend who is frequently in your company. The pit bull has become like a car to many people you can trade it for a better one. Before you choose a pit bull you will have to make lifestyle changes. We as society needs to know when we choose a pit bull companion, it’s like choosing a soul mate, for better for worse!!

I remember when I got my pit bull 3months before I got my new car. I started spending less time with my pit bull and more with my car and she could sense that. One day I came home and a piece of my new cars bumper was missing. I was so cross with Chloe (my dog). This is just my story, I could give the dog away but I realized that I was at fault and to blame for what has happened. I manage to fix the car and most important me Chloe has a better relationship now, yes a relationship.

Pit bull came to her aid

OTTAWA -- It was about -40C and Noella Mitchell lay helpless on the handicap ramp

leading up to her home. She'd soon be staring into the eyes of a pit bull and thinking she

was about to die. The 42-year-old woman, who has Graves' disease, which causes

muscular weakness, wasn't able to get up.

Her cries for help went unheard, except by Cloe, her son's friend's pit bull, which somehow

got out of the house.

"When I saw her I thought I was dead," said Mitchell.

But to Mitchell's surprise, Cloe began licking her face and trying to bring attention to her fall.

"She sat there beside me, howling and barking."

At one point the desperate dog tried to pull Mitchell inside. Finally, her son's friend came

home.

Ontario has become the first province to ban pit bulls. And Mitchell said she used to lock up

the dog, but "I will never lock her up again."

Current pit bull owners will be able to keep their dogs as long as they're neutered, and

muzzled and leashed outside.

adopt a pit bull

Why adopt a pit bull

There are too many homeless pit bulls and on the street.  These dogs tend to end up either being euthanized, used for fighting or someone breeds with them to make money. If you are thinking of a getting a pit bull consider adopting one. You will make a huge difference in the dog’s life you adopt. We need to also address these issues that we have with pit bulls being over bred. I have mentioned previously that breeders should be responsible, and at least have owners for the pups before they start the breeding process. Also if you have a female pit bull and you have no plans on breeding with her, take your dog to be sterilized, this will also eliminate unnecessary problems. I will later write a follow up  article including places you can adopt a pit bull from.  This story was inspired by Patrick the pit bull

Patrick, the pit bull that was rescued after it was starved and discarded down a trash chute, is making progress and could be ready for adoption by July, his caregivers told NBC New York on Thursday.

Associated Humane Societies, the group handling the adoption of the animal that won the hearts of dog lovers everywhere, has received thousands of requests from people wanting to give him a home.

Bruce Sanchez, the organization’s general manager, said it hopes to find Patrick a home by early July.

The pup will spend the next few months recovering from the devastating abuse he suffered. His caregivers say he has made great strides, and is now able to run and play with toys — many of which have been donated from well-wishers.

He is “absolutely wonderful,” said Patricia Smillie-Scavelli, administrator at Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Tinton, N.J.

On Tuesday, he had surgery to remove a solid, three-inch-long hairball from his stomach.

“It looked more like a big, flat rock,” said Smillie-Scavelli. “It was very heavy.”

The dog was also neutered and given a dental examination.

Associated Humane Societies said that Patrick’s medical milestones are the promising first steps toward adoption.

But animals recovering from abuse and neglect often need to work on social behavior, such as growling and snapping, before moving on to a new home.

“This was just the first half of the battle,” Sanchez told NBC New York. “Once they start to feel well, they start to have issues.”

Patrick, named for being discovered the day before St. Patrick’s Day, was originally found by a Newark housing complex maintenance worker, who alerted the Associated Humane Societies.

The dog was allegedly tied to an apartment balcony and starved for more than a week by its owner, Kisha Curtis. The dog was then tossed in a garbage bag and shoved down the garbage chute of the 22-story building.

When the employee found the dog, Sanchez said the dried saliva in his mouth caused his mouth to fuse shut, and it had to be pried apart. He was “almost skeletal and clinging to life,” Sanchez said in March.

The organization immediately put the dog on intravenous fluid and covered him with heating pads before transferring him to Garden State Veterinary Specialists.

Curtis, 27, pleaded not guilty to four counts of animal abuse on March 31. Her mother said someone gave her the dog and she couldn’t care for it.

The response from the public has been even greater than the Garden State Veterinary Specialists expected. Donations came in so rapidly via a PayPal account set up on the veterinarians’ website that they had to shut down the account

Famous Pit Bulls: Helen Keller’s Pit Bull Sir Thomas

Blind and deaf since the age of 19 months, Helen Keller was an inspirational writer and speaker, and one of the most admired figures in the 20th century. She was an avid animal lover and had many canine companions throughout her long life, including her beloved pit bull, Sir Thomas. In her words:

“Whenever it is possible, my dog accompanies me on a walk or ride or sail. I have had many dog friends–huge mastiffs, soft-eyed spaniels, wood-wise setters and honest, homely bull terriers. At present the lord of my affections is one of these bull terriers. He has a long pedigree, a crooked tail and the drollest "phiz" in dogdom. My dog friends seem to understand my limitations, and always keep close beside me when I am alone. I love their affectionate ways and the eloquent wag of their tails.”
